The car is fine. The key is the problem.
Maybe it is sitting on the front seat. Maybe it vanished somewhere between the store and the parking lot. Sometimes the key is still in your hand, but the car acts like it has never seen it before.

A car lockout can happen before you even notice it. You set the fob down while loading bags. The trunk closes. The doors lock. Done.
Sometimes the keys are clearly visible through the window, sitting beside a coffee cup or on top of a gym bag. That part feels personal, even though it is not.
Trying to pull the door open with a screwdriver or metal bar can leave a mark that stays long after the keys are back in your hand. Bent trim, damaged seals and a window that suddenly whistles on I-4 are not worth it.
For a basic lockout, we come to the car and work with the door that is there. Not every model opens the same way. A pickup, compact car and newer SUV may all need a different approach.

A car parked outside a restaurant in Winter Garden may be easy to spot. One buried in a large MetroWest apartment lot may take a bit more explaining. A building number, nearby store or simple parking description is usually enough.
This is where the mood changes. A lockout is annoying. Losing the only key means the car is staying put until another one works.
Many vehicles can get a replacement key even when the original is gone. What happens next depends on the car. An older model may only need a cut key. A newer one may also need a chip or fob matched to the vehicle.

Car key replacement can often be done where the vehicle sits. That may save you from arranging a tow and then waiting somewhere else for the same work.
A spare key is one of those jobs that is easy to delay. The current key works. Nothing is wrong. Next month feels fine.
Then the only key disappears at 8:30 on a Monday morning.
Making a spare while a good key still exists is often easier. It also gives you something useful to keep at home instead of depending on one small piece of plastic every day.
If your current key is cracked, held together with tape or starting to work only after a few tries, that is already a warning. It does not need to break first.
Key fobs can be confusing because they do not always fail all at once.
The buttons may stop unlocking the doors, but the car still starts. Another fob may unlock the car and then give a "key not detected" message. Sometimes changing the battery fixes it. Sometimes it does not.
Before buying a replacement key fob online, check more than the shape. Two fobs can look nearly the same and still be wrong for each other. The small numbers on the case, the electronics inside and the vehicle year all matter.
We see this fairly often: someone buys a cheap fob, waits several days for it, then finds out it will not connect to the car. Cheap is not much of a deal when the part cannot be used.
If you already have a replacement fob, tell us where it came from and send the part number when possible. We can take a look before making promises about programming it.
For many cars, key fob programming needs equipment connected to the vehicle. It is not always the button-press trick shown in an old video. Some cars allow simple steps. Plenty do not.
A weak battery can cause short range, slow response or buttons that work only sometimes. It may also trigger a low-key warning on the dash.
Changing the battery is a sensible first step. Use the correct battery size and keep the small parts lined up when closing the case. If the fob still does not work, the trouble may be elsewhere.
And yes, sometimes the battery is fine. The fob has simply had one drop too many.
Car keys usually wear out quietly. The blade gets thinner. The plastic head loosens. The key needs a wiggle before it turns.
People get used to that. They learn the little trick. Pull it back slightly. Turn it at an angle. Hold the wheel. Then one day the trick stops working.
If a key snaps in the door or ignition, leave the broken piece where it is. Digging at it with pliers or another key can move it farther in and make the job harder.
Sometimes the key is worn and the lock is still fine. Other times the ignition has been giving trouble too. We look at the way the old key wore down and how the ignition feels before deciding what makes sense.
A fresh key will not fix an ignition that is already damaged. On the other hand, you do not want to replace an ignition when the old key was the real problem.
Some ignition work falls within auto locksmith service. Some car problems belong with a mechanic. We would rather tell you which one it looks like than send you in circles.
A plain key for an older vehicle and a push-to-start fob for a newer one are not the same job. That is why an exact price without the car details is usually not very useful.
The main things that change the cost are the vehicle, key type, programming and whether one working key still exists. The location can matter too, especially when the car is in a garage, behind a gate or somewhere difficult to reach.
When asking about price, give us the full vehicle information. "It is a Honda" narrows things down a little. "It is a 2021 Honda Accord with push-button start" is much more useful.
Once we understand the job, we can explain what needs to be done. Key cutting, programming and the replacement fob should not appear as mystery extras after the work has started.
Car key trouble does not wait until the vehicle is parked somewhere convenient. It happens outside work, at a hotel, in a driveway, near the attractions or while picking someone up.
